China-ready field guide · 7 minute read
Plan the first ride before you walk away from airport Wi-Fi
Choose one primary route from the exact terminal or station, save its pickup or exit point, and keep a staffed fallback. The goal is not to install every transport app—it is to reach the first address even if registration, data or payment fails.
Prepare one route and one independent fallback
Primary: a tested ride channel or public-transport route from the exact arrival point. Fallback: the official taxi queue or staffed counter, with the destination available in Chinese.
Choose by the handoff you can manage
| Option | Best when | Main failure point | Prepare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ride-hailing | You want door-to-door travel and can complete registration | Wrong pickup level, phone verification, payment or data | Exact pickup point, plate-check routine and Chinese destination |
| Official taxi queue | You want a staffed, app-independent road option | Language gap or an unclear destination | Chinese address card, local phone number and payment fallback |
| Metro or airport rail | The route is simple, service is operating and luggage is manageable | Last train, transfer, exit or payment setup | Operating-time check, transfer screenshot and final walk |
| Prebooked transfer | Late arrival, group luggage or accessibility needs justify it | Meeting-point confusion or delayed flight | Driver contact, terminal meeting point and delay policy |
Prepare the first pickup in five checks
- Use the exact terminal or station.
Save the arrival building, exit, pickup floor or official taxi-queue location—not only the airport or station name.
- Set up one ride channel.
Official visitor guidance lists Alipay, WeChat and DiDi Greater China; Amap also provides multilingual travel services. Complete registration while the verification number is reachable.
- Save the destination in Chinese.
Keep the property name, full address, phone number and map pin outside the ride app.
- Make payment independent.
A linked wallet is useful, but carry a physical card and RMB cash fallback so a wallet problem does not become a transport problem.
- Screenshot the handoff.
Keep the pickup instruction, route overview and official taxi location in the photo library before departure.
At pickup, verify before getting in
Match the location
Confirm terminal, door, floor and road side. A correct car at the wrong level still looks like a missing driver.
Match the vehicle
Check the plate, vehicle color and service shown in the app before entering. Use the in-app contact route when details disagree.
Match the destination
Show the Chinese address and map pin, especially when the hotel has several branches or entrances.
Before leaving the terminal
- Open the live route.
Confirm data works and the destination pin matches the saved Chinese address.
- Check the fallback.
Locate the official taxi queue, metro entrance or staffed counter while signs and Wi-Fi are still available.
- Share the first movement.
Send the vehicle or route details to another traveler when practical and keep the destination visible until arrival.
